John T. McMurran family papers, 1820-1875.

Correspondence and business and legal papers of McMurran, his wife, Mary Louisa Turner McMurran, and their daughter, Mary Louisa McMurran, concern travel, social life, administration of the Woodlands and Killarney plantations, and the estate of McMurran. Items include a statement of a slave regarding his freedom; a receipt for payment of a freedman laborer; invoices for household furnishings; a survey of the Killarney Plantation, Concordia Parish, Louisiana; an inventory of the Woodlands Plantation, including a list of books; minutes of a meeting of the Mississippi Bar Association; and the last will of John T. McMurran. Letters mention judgeships in Mississippi, the funeral of Henry Clay, the sale of the plantation of a mulatto politician, the effects of Reconstruction, and problems of plantation management during Reconstruction. Estate papers of William B. Griffith include legal papers, bills, receipts, and property inventories relative to the administration of Griffith's estate. The William Edward T. Griffith papers consist of compositions and speeches presented while he was a student at Oakland College in Mississippi. The collection includes an Administrator's record book containing accounts pertaining to the plantations managed by John T. McMurran or his estate.
